Exploring the Grand Canyon’s Southern Rim & Kaibab National Forest

Arizona is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and the Grand Canyon is one of the most jaw-dropping. With sweeping views of one of the deepest canyons in the United States, this natural marvel is something everyone should visit.

But where to start? An easy choice would be the Southern Rim, one of the most accessible parts of the canyon and an easy way to experience it for the first time. While you’re at it, stop by the nearby Kaibab National Forest, featuring lush landscapes and towering pines—a stark contrast to the dry deserts of the area. We’ll briefly cover each as we help you plan your Arizona Adventure.

The Southern Rim

The Southern Rim might just be the best part of this already incredible natural landscape, with panoramic views that stretch on for miles. It features some of the best viewpoints of the canyon, including Mather Point and Desert View Watchtower, and attracts millions of visitors each year from all over the world. It’s also open year-round, so regardless of when you visit you can drop in for a weekend excursion. Here are some of the highlights to add to your itinerary:

Highlights

  • Grand Canyon Village: The main visitor’s hub, Grand Canyon Village, provides dining options and access to historic sites, such as the El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House. These buildings date back to the early 1900s and are perfect for those who appreciate a little local history.
  • Desert View Drive: This 23-mile scenic drive showcases the Grand Canyon and Colorado River and leads to the iconic Desert View Watchtower.
  • Hiking Galore: For those wanting to trek on foot, the Grand Canyon has a variety of popular hiking trails. The famous Bright Angel Trail offers a challenging but rewarding descent down the canyon, giving you an up-close look at the worn canyon walls. Another slightly easier trail, the Rim Trail, is mostly a flat walk around the canyon’s edge, and is perfect for families with small children or casual hikers.
  • Astounding Views: The South Rim is packed with bucket-list worthy vistas, and the sunrises and sunsets are can’t-miss experiences. Nothing beats watching the desert come alive as light streaks across the rocks and ridges.

Kaibab National Forest

Surrounding the South Rim is the Kaibab National Forest, full of pines, firs, and hidden meadows. This tranquil spot offers a change of scenery from the surrounding desert, and plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting. Here are some highlights of the forest:

Highlights

  • Scenery: Towering ponderosa pines, Douglas firs, and aspen groves blanket the terrain, offering a stark contrast against the deep red rock cliffs and sprawling desert.
  • Wildlife: Kaibab is home to over 300 species of birds, along with mule deer, elk, and bears. You’ll find plenty of curious critters to observe, so bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for the many animals that call Kaibab National Forest their home.
  • Outdoor Activities: Hiking, biking, and even cross-country skiing are popular activities in Kaibab National Forest. Be sure to plan ahead depending on the time of year you visit.

Tips for a “Grand” Time

See our tips below to ensure that you have a “grand” time at the Southern Rim and Kaibab National Forest.

  • Avoid the Crowds: Summer time tends to be the busiest time of year, and you can enjoy a less-crowded experience by going in the fall or spring. Heading out early in the morning is also a great way to have those views all to yourself.
  • Stay Hydrated: Arizona’s climate is dry and hot, and with nearly endless opportunities for hiking or biking, you’ll want to make sure you’re prepared with plenty of water. Dress appropriately based on the season as well, with sturdy shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Prepare for Altitude: Avoid altitude sickness by taking the hikes slowly. At around 7,000 feet, the Grand Canyon is at a higher elevation than what you may be used to, which can take a toll on the body.
  • Respect the Environment: Stick to trails and don’t disturb the wildlife. Remember to pack out any trash that you bring into the canyon or forest.
